Brushing up course and assessment Mathematics

On this website, you will find information about the mathematics assessment and brushing up course at the beginning of your first year Bachelor of Business Administration at HUB. To prepare for this assessment, we offer a brushing up course at the beginning of September. On this website, you will also find slides, handouts and exercises for this brushing up course; even if you do not attend the brushing up course, this material may help you to prepare for the assessment.
Assessment Mathematics: for who ?
The purpose of the assessment is to direct you to the most appropriate course package for mathematics. For the first year of BBA mathematics at HUB, we offer two different course packages.
- The standard package contains two hours of mathematics per week, plus every second week (optionally) a two-hour tutorial where supplementary exercises will be made.
- Students who need more support can take the slow mathematics course, which contains four hours of mathematics per week.
The standard package and the slow mathematics package cover the same material; during the semester the students of the two groups take the same tests and at the end of the semester the exams are equivalent.
For students inside the Council of Europe, the assessment test is obligatory, the brushing up course is not. It is in your advantage however to take part in the brushing up course, where the material necessary to start the BBA will be reviewed. Based on the assessment, you will be advised to take the standard or the slow Mathematics package.
For students outside the Council of Europe, it is obligatory to take a SAT Reasoning Math test (or ACT test), prior to enrollment at HUB.
- If your SAT Reasoning Math Test result is between 500 and 550 (or your ACT Math result is between 19 and 22), you can start the BBA programme but you will need supplementary support for mathematics. Part of this supplementary support are the brushing up course and the corresponding assessment test. The brushing up course and the assessment are obligatory for you.
- If your SAT Reasoning Math Test result is at least 550 (or your ACT Math result is at least 22), you are ready to start the BBA standard Mathematics package. You may wish to take part in the assessment. It will give you an idea of our teaching and exam style, and you will receive advise on your strong and weak points.
Students who have successfully completed the English & Economics for Academic Studies undergraduate program at HUB, are exempted from the assessment test.
Practical information
The assessment will cover:
- algebra: operations with algebraic expressions, factoring, fractions, equations;
- linear functions, lines, linear equations and inequalities, linear functions, systems of linear equations, word problems;
- quadratic functions, parabolas, quadratic equations and inequalities, word problems;
- exponents and logarithms;
- exponential functions, simple exponential equations, word problems.
The assessment will take place on Monday 17 and Tuesday 18 September 2012.
For the assessment, you need to bring your own pen and a ruler. You will also need a scientific calculator. If you do not have a scientific calculator, you can borrow one from HUB for the time of the brushing-up course and the test.
After receiving the question paper, you first get the time to write down your answers in full. Next, with your written preparation you come to the lecturers to be examined orally. You need to take into account that the assessment may take up to 3 or 4 hours. You may bring a snack and/or a drink if you wish.
You will find an example of a question paper here when the brushing-up course is finished.
After taking the assessment, you will be able to sign up for an appointment with the mathematics lecturers on Tuesday 18 or Wednesday 19 September. At this meeting, we will discuss your result and give you advice about the most appropriate mathematics course package for you.
Brushing-up course
To review the material for the assessment, a brushing-up course has been organised, from Monday 10 till Friday 14 September 2012, every day from 9:00 till 13:00.
Below, you find an example assessment test and the material (handouts, exercises) for the brushing-up course in September 2011.

Students who attend the brushing-up course are expected to spend about 2 hours after each class to study the content of the class and to make supplementary exercises. During the weekend following the brushing up course we expect you to rehearse the content and to do the supplementary exercises that you find on this website in order to prepare for the assessment.
