What is the difference between MIBEM and MIBEB?
MIBEM and MIBEB are equivalent programmes, leading to a master degree. MIBEM is the English-taught equivalent of MIBEB, the Dutch-taught programme. MIBEB includes a number of English-taught courses (Topics in HRM, Global Information Management, Business Game, Comparative International Management, International Financial Management).
What is the preparatory track about?
In case you do not have any background in economics, management and/or statistics, you will have to take a preparatory track equaling 8 credits. You will have to take the track at the same time as the MIBEM programme. The track consists of Business Statistics (5 credits) and Introduction to Management and Economics (3 credits). If you can provide evidence of proficiency in either statistics or economics and management, you will be exempted from the corresponding course in the preparatory track.

HUB offers a standard learning path but composition of your own programme, within the limits of the programme is a flexible option.
You will have to take the following into account:
- MIBEM/B is daytime education, we do not offer any evening classes nor distance learning. As such, we do not recommend you to combine part-time studies with a full-time job.
- As a part-time MIBEM/B student, you are also strongly recommended to attend classes since evaluation is done in class.
- You should take more or less 30 credits in the first and another 30 in the second year.
- The following courses should be taken in the first year: Business Economics, Accounting for international managers, Macroeconomics for international business, Business research methods. Thereupon, as a part-time student you cannot take the Business game, Master thesis and Research proposal master thesis in their first year.
For more information, you might contact a learning path coach.
Can I combine MIBEM/B studies and work?
It is rather challenging to combine both. MIBEM/B is daytime education and you are also evaluated in class. We do not recommend you to combine part-time studies with a full-time job. A lot depends on your employer’s an job’s flexibility, not on the programme’s nor the professors’ flexibility. We do not have any special arrangements, nor special evaluation formats for working students. MIBEM/B are challenging, daytime programmes.
Every course is evaluated in a different way. In January, you sit exams for subjects you have read in the first semester. The second semester courses are examined during the examination session in May/June. You are evaluated on the basis of written exams, individual papers, group work or presentations. You can find the evaluation criteria in the course ECTS sheets.
How many times can I take or re-take exams?
If you fail an exam in January or June, you will have the opportunity to re-take it in August/September.
What if I fail for the second time?
If you fail a course for the second time, you will have to re-register for the new academic year. You only pay those credits you take (not the full tuition fee). However, students whose residence in Belgium is based on their registration at HUB, need to finalise their study programme within two years.
What does the course schedule look like?
In the first semester, the majority of the courses take place. You have four days of classes and one classfree day. In the second semester, only five classes are scheduled. Thereupon, the Business Game does not take place on a weekly basis and Topics in Human Resources (taught by an American professor) is scheduled during two weeks. However, you need more time to work on your master thesis.
The MIBEM/B programme is a one-year master programme for non-economic students. It is an intentsive programme since you are introduced to new topics and courses, have to write a master thesis within a field of study which is completely new, have to work on papers, presentations and group work within one academic year. Generally speaking, the majority of the students does not graduate within one year but postpones their master thesis to the next academic year.
Can I take extra language courses?
HUB organises French for beginners level I and II in the first and second semester. You will be given course details during the Orientation Days. The registration fee is 25 EUR. However, we do not recommend you to take too much extra courses.
What does the master thesis look like?
MIBEM/B students have to submit a master thesis by the end of the year. At the Faculty of Economics and Management the master thesis includes a scientifically sound research assignment, completed independently by the student under a supervisor’s guidance. The student reports on his/her research in writing and defends it orally before a jury. Students will be supported by means of:
- MA thesis information sessions;
- MA thesis fair;
- MA thesis topic offer;
- Research proposal master thesis classes.
For more information, take a look at the master thesis webpage.
Based on previously obtained diplomas and certificates HUB can give you an exemption for courses. You must apply for exemptions at the start of the academic year and no later than 15 October; send the application form (www.hubrussel.net) to the Student Administrative Services Centre.
Can I take part in the Erasmus exchange programme?
MIBEM/B students have the opportunity to go abroad for one semester. They can spend the second semester at the Warsaw School of Economics (Poland), ICHEC (Belgium) or TEC de Monterrey (Mexico). For further information, please contact the International Office (Suzanne Steijleman).
