Health insurance in Belgium

Students should register with a Belgian health insurance company (see telephone numbers below) upon arrival. The following documents will be required: European Health Insurance Card (copy) or other legal forms and a copy of a valid ID or passport. Upon registration you will receive a SIS card, your guarantee that the health insurance company will reimburse unforeseen medical expenses. In order to inform our arriving students in a proper way, Euromut is invited to HUBrussel to do a presentation and register students immediately at the beginning of the academic year.

Medical facilities

In Belgium you are free to choose any general practitioner (GP) or specialist you like, no matter where you live. For reliable recommendations and referrals you need a good GP, so don’t be afraid to ask your International Office to recommend one or call the CHS Help Line. All doctors are listed in the White Pages telephone book under D for "Doctors in de Geneeskunde."

If you are looking for a general practioner in Brussels you can easily look for one on the following website: www.bhak.be and choose the zip code of your commune.

If you have to go to hospital or if you accompany a member of your family to a hospital emergency room, don’t forget to take proof of your health coverage with you if you are covered by the Belgian system. For a complete list of hospitals in Brussels you can consult the expatica website.

Local newspapers provide information about emergency medical and dental services as well as about all-night chemists. Your local chemist will also display a list of nearby chemists open outside usual working hours, in accordance with a rota system.
